Our History

The Advanced Financial Group (TAFG) was founded by Robert and Sheila Telford, when they purchased the American General Life Insurance Agency in 1991. Both Robert and Sheila brought many years of experience in the banking industry to TAFG. Starting off, TAFG only offered insurance products such as – health, life, and annuities.

Robert saw a growing need to offer investment products to clients, so in 1993, he became a Registered Representative of our Broker/Dealer, Woodlands Securities Corporation. Adding investments to the list of quality products offered allowed TAFG to extend its reach to clientele.

In 1996, John Kennedy joined our team to manage the school benefit business. When John joined TAFG, he had already spent 12 years in the school benefit business. Since 1996, our school benefit business has grown to over 20 school districts. TAFG also became a Third Party Administrator during this time.

Seeing the need to start planning for TAFG’s future after his retirement, Robert hired Chris Moss, Sheila’s son, in 1999. This created the feel of TAFG being a family owned business. Chris quickly learned the business, and became an essential part of the day to day operations.

Sheila retired in 2014, leaving Robert to operate the business. Robert retired in 2015, and both Robert and Sheila sold the business to Chris in 2016.

Since the inception of TAFG, our principles have been to ensure our client’s financial goals and objectives are met at the forefront of every decision, and we will continue to work this way for our clients in the future.
